Dr. Michael Ina

I was first hired at the Arguello Pet Hospital in the summer of 1968. I was hired as a kennel person to gain experience in veterinary medicine which was a prerequisite to apply to the veterinary schools. I continued working at Arguello Pet Hospital while I was an undergraduate student at the University of California, Davis.

I was fortunate to gain acceptance to the School of Veterinary Medicine, Davis and graduated in June 1974. After graduation, I immediately began working at the Arguello Pet Hospital as a veterinarian with Elmo Shropshire, DVM.

In 1982, I purchased the practice from Elmo Shropshire.  It was a one doctor, one technician and one receptionist veterinary hospital. I dedicated myself to practicing and providing quality medicine and client service. This dedication has enabled the hospital to grow to its present state of six doctors and a staff of over twenty employees. The entire staff is dedicated to provide compassionate care to our patients, their owners and to one another.

My oldest daughter, Cecily, is a second grade school teacher in the Japanese Bilingual Bicultural Program at Rosa Parks in San Francisco. My youngest daughter, Jamie, graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine, Davis, in June 2008 and has since been practicing with me at Arguello Pet Hospital.

After 40 years of practicing veterinary medicine at Arguello Pet Hospital, I developed several medical issues that required a medical leave of absence from July to December 2014. After this medical leave and seeing improved health, I had chosen to permanently retire from practicing veterinary medicine.  I cannot adequately thank the many clients that supported me throughout all these years.  I will sincerely miss our friendships and trust that was given to me.

As of January 1, 2015, I have stopped seeing patients at APH. My daughter, Jamie Ina, has taken the position of Medical Director and Chief of Staff. However, I am still helping Jamie with the management of the APH. You may see me at the hospital but it is only in a managerial position.

Since I was young, I have always been around animals and grew up around the pet hospital. Growing up in a house full of animals, a wonderful father as a mentor, and a love of biological sciences, I knew I wanted to become a veterinarian. I began working at Arguello as a technician when I was in high school and always came back during the summer to continue learning throughout my college years.

I studied animal science and earned a bachelor's degree from UC Davis in 2004. I began veterinary school immediately after with an emphasis in small animal medicine. I graduated from UC Davis veterinary school in 2008 and have been working at Arguello as a veterinarian ever since. When I'm not working, I love spending time with my husband, our twins (Mikey and Natalie) and our two dogs (Yoshi and Nori).

In 2014, I began transitioning into the position of medical director with the help of my father. We both have similar work ethic and high standards of care, which made the transition very smooth and relatively easy. I am a very hard worker with a strong dedication to maintaining excellent care to our patients, clients and staff.

While growing up in a San Fernando Valley house full of cats, I always dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. I earned an undergraduate degree in zoology at UC Santa Barbara and a large portion of my time in Santa Barbara was spent volunteering for the local animal shelter and the Marine Mammal Center.

The many hours I spent enjoying taking care of these animals solidified my desire to become a veterinarian. Immediately after I graduated UCSB in 1997, I started veterinary school at UC Davis. During veterinary school I emphasized small animal medicine and helped provide care for the pets of the homeless population in Sacramento.

I moved to San Francisco in 2001 and I have been having a great time exploring Northern California. During my free time I enjoy going to concerts and plays, hiking, caring for my cat Jimmy and traveling to Santa Cruz to spend time with my two nephews.

As a child, I always dreamt of becoming a veterinarian, but as I left for college, I found a new interest in clinical psychology. That all changed the summer of my junior year when I interned with a small animal veterinarian and realized that the six-year-old me was right and that my true calling was in veterinary medicine.

After graduating with a B.A. in psychology from Smith College in Massachusetts, I returned home to Southern California. There I worked part time as a veterinary technician and went to school part time to fulfill the prerequisites for veterinary school. I also spent a brief period working in human cancer research at the City of Hope National Medical Center.

I graduated from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 2010 with an emphasis in small animal medicine. I then completed a one-year rotating internship at VCA San Francisco Veterinary Specialists in 2011. After my internship, I worked between two general practices in the East Bay before coming to Arguello Pet Hospital.

I am excited to join the team here and get to know all the human and furry faces! In my spare time I enjoy cooking new recipes, hiking, and traveling whenever possible (my most recent trip was to Turkey). I share my home with my fiance Tony and handsome cat, Rudy, who I adopted while at UC Davis.

I am originally from southern California, and am looking forward to making the San Francisco Bay Area my permanent home and being a part of this wonderfully diverse community.

I graduated with honors from UC San Diego with a bachelor's degree in computer science and a double minor in sociology and cognitive science. I briefly worked in industry as a computer scientist at a startup company, went to graduate school, and eventually made the decision to switch career paths to pursue my childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian.

After gaining experience as a volunteer at an animal shelter and working as a veterinary assistant, I was accepted to Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. I was inducted into the Phi Zeta Honor Society and graduated with honors in 2010. I completed a small animal medicine and surgery rotating internship at Garden State Veterinary Specialists in New Jersey in 2011, and an internal medicine specialty internship at the Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center of Westbury in New York in 2012. Before joining the team at Arguello Pet Hospital in June of 2014, I worked as a general practitioner and emergency relief veterinarian in California's Central Valley.

My professional interests include internal medicine, critical care, ultrasonography, endoscopy, and laparoscopic procedures. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, birding, reading, photography, watching documentaries, and am enthusiastically taking piano lessons as an adult student. I live with my boyfriend and two cats, Cozy (a hurricane Ike rescue) and Minichuf.

I was born in New Jersey, but I grew up in the East Bay in the small town of Moraga.  I was always fascinated by animals and nature, so going into veterinary medicine was naturally my dream as a child.  When I went away to college at UC Davis, I found a new interest in psychology, so I pursued a degree in that field.  Towards the end of my degree, my educational interest veered back towards animals, and I took a research position studying animal predator-prey relationships.  After graduating with a degree in Psychology, I jumped on a plane to Greece to volunteer at a wildlife rehabilitation facility for a few months.  My work in Greece is what truly reignited the flame of my veterinary passion.  When I returned from Greece, I took a job as a veterinary technician for an animal shelter.  While at the shelter I decided to fully invest myself into becoming a veterinarian and I started taking night courses to fulfill the necessary science prerequisites that were not part of my psychology degree.   It took me about 3 years to finish up all the required coursework for veterinary school.  After finishing my classes, I decided to broaden my veterinary experiences.  I was fortunate enough to get a job at Arguello Pet Hospital as a veterinary technician.  I worked at Arguello for several months before I was accepted into the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.  During veterinary school I focused my education on small animal practice and developed an interest in surgery, internal medicine, and urgent care.  I graduated from UC Davis with Phi Zeta Honors in 2015.  I feel very grateful to again find myself at Arguello Pet Hospital.

During my free time I try to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible.  I am an avid fisherman and have picked up free diving for abalone in recent years.  I also like to go hiking with my wife on the many trails in Marin.  My wife is also a veterinarian; we met when I was a technician at the animal shelter.  We live in Marin with our daughter Emily and two wild and entertaining cats, Eddie and Mikey.

I grew up in Southern California, loving animals and deciding as a child that I wanted to become a veterinarian.  I followed many others in the family to college at UC Berkeley, during which time I fell in love with the Bay Area and realized there is no better place to live.  I went on to veterinary school at UC Davis, graduating in 1996.  I've been working in small animal private practice ever since, with a little diversion to Portland, Oregon and Champaign, Illinois before I returned home to the Bay Area in 2005.  I enjoy all aspects of internal medicine, and am especially passionate about client education and preventive medicine.

I live in San Francisco, and I like to spend my free time exploring the city, traveling, reading and hanging out with fellow Francophiles.  Most of all I enjoy spending time with friends and family, including my cats Pia and Tiger.
